Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Akron

A large federal drug bust has led to the arrest of 13 people who were charged with federal drug trafficking. The investigation uncovered an attempt to flood the Akron area with cocaine, meth, and other drugs. Massive amounts of illegal substances were discovered, including 35 pounds of fentanyl. This is particularly disturbing since as little as two milligrams is enough to be deadly. Authorities say the drugs were being stored in and distributed from homes in Akron. The suspects included 10 Akron residents, a Cleveland man, and two individuals from West Virginia.

Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Akron, OH

Several local organizations are working hard to minimize the impact of illegal drug use in the Akron area. The Summit County Opiate & Addiction Task Force is a collaboration of businesses, nonprofits, government entities, grassroots organizations, individuals, and families. This group meets once per quarter to discuss the impact of drug use on the community and propose life-saving solutions.

In addition, Summit County's Project DAWN (Deaths Avoided with Naloxone) is a community-based project focused on preventing drug overdoses. Participants in the group learn essential skills, such as identifying the signs of overdose and determining the type of overdose, as well as performing rescue breathing, calling 911, and administering Naloxone.
